Earl Simmons se narodil 18. prosince 1970 v Baltomoru v Marylandu . Později se mladý Earl přestěhoval i se svojí tetou do New Yorku, protože ho jeho rodina chtěla dostat z vlivu Baltimorské komunity. Proto že se zdá, že všechno co DMX udělal nemělo chybu, tak se zde musím zmínit i o tom, že měl také v roce 2001 problémy se zákonem, když řídil své auto bez řidičského průkazu.
Protože se DMX vždy hodně zajímal o životy ostatních lidí, strávil mnoho vánočních svátků v Harlemské nemocnici na pediatrickém oddělení, pro děti nakažené AIDS. Během svátků Díkuvzdání zase rozváží jídlo do center pro lidi bez domova. Také přispěl více než velkorysým darem na záchranu kostela, aby nemusel být uzavřen a pomocí jeho fondu "Mariela House Foundation" pomohl podpořit svobodné mladistvé matky.
